Mali, officially the Republic of Mali, has an area of just over 1,240,000 square kilometres (480,000 sq mi). The population of Mali is 19.1 million.

Mali has Africa’s most northerly elephants, a single population of a few hundred in the Gourma region who migrate large distances and are well adapted to the arid conditions of the Sahel.
